The music video for “First Love” by Jennifer Lopez was directed by Anthony Mandler and filmed in the California desert outside Los Angeles in early May 2014. Shot entirely in black and white, the video captures the song’s romantic yet reflective mood through striking desert landscapes, dramatic fashion and sensual imagery. It opens with Lopez delivering a spoken introduction about leaving the world behind to discover herself and finding love, as she wanders through the barren landscape in an elegant couture gown. She later appears wearing a plunging black swimsuit, moving across the desert sand as a mysterious motorcyclist arrives in full protective gear. Throughout the video, Lopez showcases a variety of sophisticated and revealing outfits before encountering British model David Gandy, who plays her love interest. Together, they bring the song’s themes of romance, desire and longing to life against the vast, isolated surroundings. Lopez explained that the video was intended to capture the feeling behind the song rather than tell a literal story about a first relationship, reflecting the wish that a special person had entered one’s life earlier. The production proved particularly challenging due to extreme weather conditions, with powerful winds, sandstorms, blowing dust and freezing temperatures making the desert shoot one of the most difficult of Lopez’s career. Gandy, who had previously declined opportunities to appear in music videos, accepted the role for the chance to work with Lopez despite the harsh conditions. Lopez initially teased the video on Instagram on May 27, 2014, before its full premiere later that day on Entertainment Tonight. The monochromatic visual gives the video a timeless, cinematic quality while emphasising its blend of fashion, sensuality and emotional storytelling.
