I’m Glad

Jennifer Lopez

Directed by
David LaChapelle
Released

The music video for Jennifer Lopez’s “I’m Glad” was directed by David LaChapelle and pays homage to the 1983 film Flashdance, recreating its iconic sets, costumes, and choreography. Filmed in February 2003, the video follows Lopez as an aspiring dancer who works during the day and pursues her passion for dance at night. It opens with her arriving at a dance audition wearing a puffy jacket and scarf, where she faces a panel of judges. The story then shifts between scenes from her everyday life, including relaxing at her modest home, riding a bicycle through the neighbourhood with her dog, working as a welder, and performing at a local club. In one sequence, Lopez showcases intricate choreography in a red outfit before the video follows her exercising and practising her dance moves in preparation for the audition. As she returns to the audition, she walks past a line of intimidating ballerinas before delivering an energetic performance in front of the judges, even dancing on their table as they move along to the music. Featuring Lopez’s natural curly hair and a distinctly 1980s-inspired visual style, the video highlights her dancing abilities and determination to succeed. Lopez was also closely involved in the editing process, insisting that her body remain unretouched to preserve an authentic representation of her appearance.
