Released in 2001 as the third single from Jennifer Lopez’s second album, J.Lo, “I’m Real” showed off a playful, confident side of the singer, blending pop and R&B with a distinctive retro-inspired sound. Co-written by Jennifer herself alongside Troy Oliver, Cory Rooney and L.E.S., the song samples the instrumental melody of “Firecracker” by Japanese electronic group Yellow Magic Orchestra.
The track was especially personal for J.Lo, who revealed that it was the first time she had written a melody herself. Its catchy hook, cheeky lyrics and laid-back groove made it a memorable highlight of the J.Lo era, while Sean “Puffy” Combs added the instantly recognisable spoken line, “She’s a bad, bad bitch.”
The accompanying music video features Jennifer cruising down a highway on a motorcycle before breaking into energetic choreography, capturing the carefree attitude of the early 2000s. “I’m Real” later became even more famous through its remix with Ja Rule, helping cement the song’s place among J.Lo’s most recognisable hits.
