Charlie Cantilini is a warm-hearted woman who has spent years searching for a lasting romantic connection. When she meets Kevin Fields, a successful and charming doctor, she believes she has finally found the relationship she has been hoping for. Their romance progresses quickly, and Kevin proposes marriage, leaving Charlie delighted at the prospect of beginning a new chapter in her life. However, her happiness is complicated by Kevin’s mother, Viola Fields, a former television personality whose career has recently collapsed.
Fearful of losing her position as the most important woman in her son’s life, Viola views Charlie as a threat and becomes determined to prevent the marriage. Initially attempting to appear welcoming, Viola gradually subjects Charlie to a series of increasingly outrageous tests and humiliations. Charlie tries to maintain her composure and win her future mother-in-law’s approval, but Viola’s behaviour forces her to reconsider how much she is willing to tolerate. As the rivalry intensifies, both women become involved in a battle of wills that threatens to undermine Kevin’s relationship with each of them.
Their conflict exposes insecurities on both sides: Charlie wants to be accepted into her future family, while Viola fears that her relationship with her son is changing beyond her control. The film uses exaggerated confrontations and physical comedy to explore the challenges of blending families, navigating generational differences and establishing boundaries.
Ultimately, Charlie must decide whether to continue seeking Viola’s approval or stand up for herself and the future she wants to build.
