Set against the backdrop of New York City’s nightlife and the financial uncertainty following the 2008 economic crisis, Hustlers follows Destiny, a young dancer struggling to support herself, who meets Ramona Vega, an experienced and charismatic performer.
Played by Jennifer Lopez, Ramona becomes a mentor to Destiny, introducing her to the lucrative world of high-end clientele, extravagant spending and the financial rewards available at their club. Initially, the women enjoy the freedom and security their earnings provide. However, when the financial crisis devastates their industry, their income becomes increasingly unpredictable, and their futures grow uncertain. Ramona develops a scheme to exploit wealthy clients through elaborate social encounters, drugging them and charging their credit cards without their knowledge.
Destiny becomes involved, and other women join the operation as they attempt to regain control over their financial circumstances. What begins as a means of survival gradually escalates into a criminal enterprise with increasingly serious consequences. As the scheme grows, the friendships between the women become entangled with questions of loyalty, ambition and morality. The film follows their rise, the pressures that threaten their operation and the eventual investigation that exposes their activities.
Inspired by a published account of real events, Hustlers examines economic inequality, female solidarity, exploitation and the complicated boundaries between empowerment and criminality. Ramona emerges as a formidable, magnetic figure whose confidence conceals vulnerabilities and whose determination to protect her chosen family ultimately shapes the story.
