Ollie Trinke is a successful New York publicist whose life changes dramatically after the death of his wife, Gertrude, during childbirth. Suddenly responsible for raising their daughter, Gertie, he struggles to balance his grief with the demands of single parenthood.
His professional ambitions collapse after a humiliating incident damages his reputation and costs him his job. Forced to return to New Jersey and live with his father, Ollie finds himself confronting a future very different from the one he had planned. Years pass, and Gertie grows into a bright, spirited child whose curiosity and affection gradually help her father reconnect with life.
Although Ollie loves his daughter deeply, he remains frustrated by the limitations of his circumstances and the opportunities he believes he has lost. When he meets Maya, a video-store employee with whom he develops a connection, he begins considering the possibility of a new romantic relationship. However, his lingering resentment and reluctance to accept his changed identity threaten to undermine his progress.
As he faces decisions about returning to his former career and being present for Gertie, Ollie must determine what success means to him. The film explores the tension between ambition and responsibility, showing how parenthood can transform a person’s priorities in unexpected ways. Through humour and heartfelt family moments, Jersey Girl tells a story about grief, second chances and learning to value the life one has rather than endlessly mourning the life one imagined.
