Released in 1999 as the lead single from On the 6, “If You Had My Love” marked Jennifer Lopez’s breakthrough into the music industry. Blending pop and R&B with Latin influences, the midtempo track explores trust and expectations at the beginning of a new relationship.
The song became an international sensation, topping the US Billboard Hot 100 for five consecutive weeks and reaching number one in several countries. Its success established Lopez as a major recording artist and helped fuel the late-1990s Latin pop crossover movement.
Directed by Paul Hunter, the accompanying music video featured an innovative internet-themed concept in which viewers could watch Lopez through virtual cameras. The provocative visuals received heavy rotation on MTV and earned multiple award nominations.
